Lake Day Goes Green

Free Family Fun Event sponsored by the Onondaga Lake Partnership

The 7th Annual Onondaga Lake Day will take place Saturday, June 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Onondaga Lake Park, behind the Griffin Visitor Center near the lake's shore. The event is sponsored by the Onondaga Lake Partnership (OLP) and is designed to bring people to the lake to take part in a variety of fun and educational activities.

This year's Lake Day theme is:
“Go Green to Go Blue”

“Go Green” trail

Lake Day will showcase the latest improvements in the lake brought through Partnership programs and new this year, will feature a "Go Green" trail where visitors can pick up information on environmental practices they can do that will help the environment and specifically benefit Onondaga Lake.

The "Go Green" trail will feature rain barrels, information on rain gardens and green roofs, and examples of "green" measures to reduce the volume and pollutants carried in stormwater runoff. Free rain gauges, tree seedlings, and phosphorous-free fertilizer samples will be distributed as well as information to reduce urban nonpoint source pollution.

The day-long event will also feature 30-minute narrated boat tours of the lake and a fishing clinic for kids (fishing poles will be provided) hosted by the local chapter of the Izaak Walton League and OLP Fisheries Subcommittee. SUNY ESF will sponsor face painting and craft activities for children.

In addition, the following will be offered throughout the day:


 

Exhibits and displays   related to recreation opportunities, lake ecology, and ongoing shoreline and watershed projects to improve the lake.
 

Narrated Tram Tours   will depart from Griffin Visitor Center and provide information on lake ecology and history.
 

Live Fish Tank Display   featuring Onondaga Lake fish will be hosted by Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection, lake monitoring personnel.
 

Lake Water Quality IQ Test   - Test your knowledge of the lake and win a prize.
 

Bicycle Rides (for 3 or more!)   - Rides start at the Information Tent.
 

Open House   at the Onondaga Yacht Club.
 

Salt Museum   - learn about Syracuse's salty past.
 

Safe Boating Jamboree   - Sail & Power Squadron will offer free boat safety checks, information on proper safety equipment, and display new boats at the public marina from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
